Dear mom and dad,

Many of you are concerned and anxious about Roger spreading into our major cities and attacking our financial districts while exhausting our energy supplies. All of us remember watching our citizens flee our biggest city, Monterey, after lawyers, realtors, lenders, and authors succumbed to the epidemic. In preparation for the worst, our government built temporary shelters in a neighboring city, Salinas, to treat and feed the survivors. Shortly after, scientists suggested that the virus might be thriving and spreading from the wealthy city of Santa Barbara. We made repeated attempts to communicate with their local officials but had only sporadic, intermittent success. We feared their communication infrastructure had been attacked, as it had been in countless other towns. But we remained positive and optimistic after finally making contact. The mayor told us the disease had not infected their city and assured us that their residents, although healthy, were deeply saddened and shocked over the turn of events. Their City Council promised to send aid and vital resources to help survivors of Monterey and the refugees in Salinas. Then silence. We waited weeks, but no aid or supplies ever arrived from Santa Barbara. We prayed that they had not been attacked.

Weeks passed and the virus took a dramatic toll on both our resources and economy. In an unplanned communication, the mayor of Santa Barbara invited our top two scientists to visit their city and see for themselves that they were not the source of the virus. They said they might even have the cure to the plague. At great expense, we dispatched our two top scientists who also serve this government: Secretary of Treasury, Ralph O., and Secretary of Homeland Security, Cynthia A. They left Salinas with a sense of urgency on a train ride expected to last two weeks. The cabins gave them the opportunity to formulate the nation??s positions and questions. They worked long hours, late into the night. Naturally, they began to share more about their personal lives and private struggles. Cynthia grew increasingly attracted to his confidence and Ralph was dumbstruck by her insight. Nevertheless, they were so concerned with preserving the treasury and securing the home that they had no room to show their love to each other. They could only work and confined to a pressurized train with only anxieties and uncertainties to keep them company.
